Federal and some provincial sales tax return payments are deferred in response to tariff turbulence

The Canadian federal government, Ontario, Québec, and Manitoba provincial governments have announced optional sales tax return payments deferral, with no interest or penalties, as follows:

All returns, nonetheless, must be filed by the standard due dates.

The federal and the provincial sales tax return payments deferrals are more like short-term interest free loans for businesses. This is because those taxes are taxes collected from buyers and remitted to the respective governments. In other words, the businesses are not paying anything out of their pockets. If net tax for the respective period is negative (i.e. a refund), there is no payment to be deferred.
