The British Columbia government
has announced today a pause on the expansion of the Provincial Sales Tax (PST)
to professional services, originally set to take effect on October 1, 2026.
This decision comes in response to ongoing trade uncertainties that Canadian
businesses are facing. Premier David Eby emphasized that this adjustment will
provide businesses with necessary flexibility during challenging economic
conditions, allowing them to better manage costs.
The estimated savings from this delay are around $260 million for the 2026-27 fiscal year, benefiting both local governments and the community. Finance Minister Josie Osborne stated that protecting jobs and helping local governments manage service costs are key motivations for this pause. The paused PST expansion will will remain in effect “until the trade war is over” as announced today by the B.C. government news.
